Dentures Q & A

Dentures are oral prosthetics used to replace missing teeth.

If you lose some or all of your permanent teeth, you’re also more likely to experience serious health problems, including gum recession and bone decay.

Dentures significantly lower your risk of these issues, while making it easier to eat and speak. Additionally, they restore structure to your jaw, preventing the skin on your cheeks and around your lips from sagging.

The team at Dr. Sameh Aknouk Dental Services PC offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

If you’re missing only some of your permanent teeth, you might benefit from partial dentures. Partial dentures feature several false teeth on top of a wire framework.

The framework snaps into place around your existing permanent teeth, holding them snugly in place. You can remove partial dentures at any time, which makes cleaning them incredibly easy.

Complete dentures

If you’re missing all of the permanent teeth on your upper or lower arch, you might benefit from complete dentures. Complete dentures feature a full arch of false teeth on top of a pink acrylic base.

Complete dentures fit snugly over your gums, but you apply a denture adhesive to prevent slipping or sliding. Like partial dentures, complete dentures are easy to remove and clean.

At Dr. Sameh Aknouk Dental Services PC, getting dentures begins with an oral exam, a review of your oral health history, and discussing your goals for treatment.

After gathering this information, your provider takes impressions of your remaining teeth or gums. They use these impressions to manufacture a custom set of dentures on-site in their state-of-the-art dental laboratory.

A week or two later, you return to try on your new dentures. Your provider makes adjustments as necessary, and you leave the office with a brilliant, healthy smile.

Dentures are just like your natural teeth in that they require cleaning daily. Plaque, food particles, and harmful bacteria are ever-present, so it’s important to practice good oral hygiene.

Once you get your dentures, your provider instructs you on how to clean and care for them. Typically, this involves rinsing them in cold water after each meal and brushing them once in the morning and evening with a soft-bristle toothbrush. At night, you soak your dentures in a professional cleaning solution.
